OnlineHost: KaaTee123 has entered the room.
OnlineHost: Woodybucks has entered the room.

payment
MWDebtFree: TN had a good question, does you mom own any property? Do you?

FredFlick: pay
ALIMINE:

FredFlick: that is rare - usually the credit card companies realize that is

MWDebtFree: Alimine - About how much debt are we talking about?
FredFlick: pay
ALIMINE: the balance is about $9,000
MWDebtFree: Are you able to make the payments on it?
ALIMINE: I have made payments of about $1500
TLN1882007: Alimine, is the house free and clear?
OnlineHost: FFurio4135 has entered the room.
ALIMINE: yes the house is paid for
FredFlick: how goes tig?
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Are either of you living in the home?
Tghrek: me ok
ALIMINE: no
OnlineHost: ILG123 has left the room.
FredFlick: ugh ugh
Tghrek: debtfree busy, though
MWDebtFree: Can you rent it out or sell it to satisfy the debt?
OnlineHost: ILG123 has entered the room.
TLN1882007: Al, can't you take a small equity loan on the house and pay off
the card?
ALIMINE: we are considering selling the home or renting
MWDebtFree: NOOOOO
OnlineHost: Woodybucks has left the room.
FredFlick: how about mortgage?
MWDebtFree: TLN - No home equity loans.
Tghrek: no! no loans!
MWDebtFree: BAD idea.
Tghrek: do not take equity loans or mortgage the house!
Tghrek: baaaaaad idea
MWDebtFree: If no one is living in the home, why not sell it outright or rent
it out?
ALIMINE: Had not considered that anyway
DRDimond: what's bad about a home equity loan?
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Good girl!
FredFlick: much better to displace yourself from your home to gain a mere
9000?
TLN1882007: Sorry for the bad advice :-))))
ALIMINE: \we p[robably will sell it
MWDebtFree: DrDimond - You cannot borrow your way out of debt.
TLN1882007: Lost it for a minute. I'm okay now!
ALIMINE: :))
MWDebtFree: Taking out a loan is perpetuating the behavior that got you into
trouble in the first place.
MWDebtFree: TLN - {smiles}
FredFlick: no you can't but by getting better loans you can buy time and
lessen the burden
MWDebtFree: FRED - You are incorrect.
FredFlick: must spend money to make money
ILG123: mw, i learned that the hard wa
Tghrek: sell or rent is the best way to go
FredFlick: so he should sell a house to gain a mere 9K? that is silly
MWDebtFree: ILG - It is a hard lesson. I'm sorry you learned it the hard
way, but you're better now!!!
ALIMINE: yeah I thought so
TLN1882007: Yes, Fred, but I agree with MW. It only is a bandaid.
Tghrek: one CANNOT borrow one's way out of debt
MWDebtFree: Fred - If the house is just sitting there, why not sell it.
FredFlick: and being a landlord is hellish
ILG123: Oh no not yet, but i'm out of denial
FredFlick: I thought he was living in the thing!
ALIMINE: particularly two states away
MWDebtFree: LOL ILG
OnlineHost: HOW9521 has entered the room.
TLN1882007: Fred, pay attention :-)
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Once you sell the home, can you use the return to
satisfy the debt?
ALIMINE: If my brother agrees
FredFlick: hmmm what about a capital gains tax? up here it is on all not
principal residences
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Do the two of you have power of attorney over your
mother's finances?
ALIMINE: So I have to pay the entire $9000 or should I negotiate for a lowere
price
TLN1882007: Al has a point there
FredFlick: yeah will do TLN sorry oh great reader of the screen
MWDebtFree: Fred - But if they wait just a little, capital gains tax will
probably be null by the time
MWDebtFree: they would have to pay it.
TLN1882007: LOL
ALIMINE: yes we do
MWDebtFree: Alimine - I would negotiate.
OnlineHost: RREOC1999 has left the room.
FredFlick: why's that MW?
ALIMINE: how much lower could I expect
MWDebtFree: Our congress is working on doing away with capital gains tax this
year.
FredFlick: ahhh must be nice!
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Anywhere from pennies on the dollar to anything below a
dollar.
Tghrek: hey fred, let's get Parliament to do the same!
MWDebtFree: Considering the circumstances, they will negotiate.
ALIMINE: I will follow that closely
FredFlick: when we ditched the cottage we were hit hard up here
TLN1882007: I didn't know that (about capital gains!). This year?
FredFlick: I'm with Tig!
FredFlick: plutonically
FredFlick: heheh
MWDebtFree: Yes indeedy. One of our regulars works for a senator on the
hill.
OnlineHost: KaaTee123 has left the room.
MWDebtFree: We get the inside scoop. That works.
FredFlick: monsiuor packwood?
MWDebtFree: LOL
MWDebtFree: No.
ALIMINE: I will keep this all in mine. thanks for the advice
TLN1882007: Are they expecting it to go into effect this year?
FredFlick: that job I would only take in a "pinch"
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Whatever you do, negotiate.
OnlineHost: CHG53 has entered the room.
TLN1882007: I have a ?
ALIMINE: say 25 cents on the dollar
MWDebtFree: TLN - It would probably go into effect in '98, but I expect it to
be retroactive for '97.
ALIMINE: is that reasonable
MWDebtFree: Alimine - It's a good starting place. You may not get it, but it
gives you some room to
MWDebtFree: negotiate.
FredFlick: they would make it retroactive? geez why do we put up with our
gov't tig?
ALIMINE: ok I can do that
MWDebtFree: TLN - Yes/
Tghrek: fred, I oughta move to TN, ya think, eh?
Tburg63: Good luck Alimine
TLN1882007: Here goes
ALIMINE: thanks I need it
TLN1882007: I'm paying my debts but don't have much breathing space. Do you
think I should try to
Tghrek: bonne chance, alimine
FredFlick: no that wouldn't be wise god surrounded by drunken Nashvillians!
MWDebtFree: Alimine - Let us know what goes on with it!!!
MWDebtFree: Watch it! Nashville is not drunk.
TLN1882007: renegotiate interest rates? Would that affect my credit? Are
they likely to do anything
OnlineHost: CHG53 has left the room.
TLN1882007: since I'm not late on anything and never have been?
ALIMINE: I certainly will
FredFlick: yes, no and yes
MWDebtFree: TLN - If you renegotiate, it won't have an adverse affect on your
credit rating at all.
Tghrek: renegotiating interest rates shouldn't show up on the credit report,
will it, DebtFree?
MWDebtFree: If you have good credit, you should call to cancel your cards and
when they ask why, tell
FredFlick: nothing to lose but the time involved in asking
MWDebtFree: them it is due to the interest rate.
TLN1882007: How would I go about doing that?
Tburg63: ANd they'llusually give a little
MWDebtFree: They will respond by lowering your interest rate.
OnlineHost: HOW9521 has left the room.
FredFlick: or sending a hit squad
FredFlick: heheh
MWDebtFree: With so many chargeoffs and BKs, they will fight to keep a
customer with a good credit
Tburg63: But only if you ask
MWDebtFree: rating.
TLN1882007: Should I still ancel the cards then if they lower the rate?
FredFlick: BK? Burger King has a visa?
MWDebtFree: TLN - No. That's the whole point.
FFurio4135: Whats so wrong with consolidating high interest debt with a tax
deduc home eq loan @ lowr %
OnlineHost: FXRmonster has entered the room.
FredFlick: nothing
FredFlick: these people fear debt
MWDebtFree: FF - The problem is that the majority of people who consolidate
end up needing to
TLN1882007: I understand. How much lower could I expect?
MWDebtFree: reconsolidate long before they are out of debt.
MWDebtFree: Thus, increasing the amount of their debt.
MWDebtFree: TLN - What is it now/
TLN1882007: 4 cards from 14 to 19%
OnlineHost: Bkparrish has entered the room.
MWDebtFree: FF - Also, you are trading unsecured debt for secured debt. Not
wise if you are already
MWDebtFree: having credit trouble.
MWDebtFree: Owie. I'd ask for at least lowering to 9 and take 12.
FredFlick: sececured debt? who's giving the mortgage a mafia don?
FFurio4135: statistic you're sighting?
TLN1882007: Okay, I'll do that tomorrow. Thanks!
OnlineHost: Eulogeo has entered the room.
OnlineHost: Eulogeo has left the room.
MWDebtFree: FF - Yes. But my partner isn't here tonight with the actual
figures. I can give you his
MWDebtFree: email address though.
MWDebtFree: He'll be happy to supply the info.
OnlineHost: Sprky 3B has entered the room.
TLN1882007: DebtFree, do I talk to just anyone or do I ask for a supervisor
or something?
MWDebtFree: Also, FF, if something happens to keep you from being able to
repay, like a medical
MWDebtFree: emergency or losing your job, then you lose your house.
MWDebtFree: Cool, eh?
FFurio4135: I'll buy your theory for now
MWDebtFree: TLN - Just call their customer service line to cancel.
OnlineHost: BurroPres has entered the room.
MWDebtFree: Their retention account reps will call you back.
MWDebtFree: Or send you mail with a great offer.
OnlineHost: SMurphy88 has entered the room.
MWDebtFree: I guarantee it.
MWDebtFree: Hi SMurphy!!!
FredFlick: FF it has been my experience that MW is usually right
Tghrek: FF, consolidation just paints you into a corner
SMurphy88: howdy all
Bkparrish: hello everyone!
MWDebtFree: Hi Bkparrish!
TLN1882007: Hi Smurph
Tezby: how can you cancel a card you owe momey on?
Tghrek: fred's going for brownie points
Tburg63: Fredd- Looking for brownie points?
MWDebtFree: Tezby - Call them up and cancel.
FredFlick: retention account reps? are those middle aged men who live with
their mothers?
MWDebtFree: The account will remain active as long as there is a balance, but
no new charges
MWDebtFree: can be added.
OnlineHost: BurroPres has left the room.
MWDebtFree: Fred - LOL
MWDebtFree: You are bad.
FredFlick: they never forget debt brother!
SalliGreen: So what is the best strategy for cleaning up these debt's.
FFurio4135: still, I'll take tax deduc % at 8-10% over credit card 18% ant
day
MWDebtFree: Salli - Level payments.
FredFlick: moving to Greenland
FXRmonster: MW...what cha think about bouncing balances from card to
card..keeping the into rates?
MWDebtFree: FF - Not worth it. Again, MWFREEDOM has the statistics, but they
are there to prove
MWDebtFree: itl.
ILG123: fred you've lost your mind
SalliGreen: what percentage of the balance should we be sending each month?
MWDebtFree: FX - Go for it!
OnlineHost: SJacobs942 has entered the room.
SJacobs942: Hi Room
FredFlick: never had it ILG
FFurio4135: nice talking go to run
MWDebtFree: Salli - You should pay off your smallest debt first, as much as
you can on it.
ILG123: but i'm inclined to agree with ya
OnlineHost: FFurio4135 has left the room.
MWDebtFree: When that one is paid off, attack the next smallest debt.
MWDebtFree: Keep going. It's a snowball effect.
TLN1882007: fred, by any chance are YOU a retention account rep?
Tburg63: LOL
FredFlick: nope a young pup actually
OnlineHost: NSaleem786 has entered the room.
TLN1882007: MW, you make it sound so FUN DebtFree!
FredFlick: course I'm not the one who's up to his eyes in debt brother
MWDebtFree: LOL It is!
DRDimond: can a person really live completely debt free?
MWDebtFree: Debtfree is a wonderful thing to be.
MWDebtFree: DRDimond - YES!!!!
FredFlick: yeah so is rich
MWDebtFree: LOL Fred. Share?
FredFlick: I plan on trying the rich thing in the future
TLN1882007: Okay, MW, I've started doing that (only 3 1/2 weeks now). WHEN
do you start feeling better?
ILG123: MW, thanks for explaining the snow ball effect
MWDebtFree: TLN - When you start winning.
MWDebtFree: ILG - No problem hon.
FredFlick: where'd FF go?
Tburg63: It seems to take so long
MWDebtFree: He went to pay off his debts.
MWDebtFree: Tburg - Yeah, but it took awhile to get INTO debt too.
MWDebtFree: Like all things in life, this too will pass.
Bkparrish: how does one change their mindset/habits to really achieve
debt-free living?
Tburg63: Yeh--I said that to someone else tonight
TLN1882007: Good answer. What about keeping yourself going until then?
FredFlick: going into debt is slow? where do you shop?
MWDebtFree: Bkparrish - By changing their behavior.
TLN1882007: LOL LOL LOL LOL
ILG123: MW i'm up against the IRS as my biggest debt
MWDebtFree: To change a bad habit, you must change your behavior.
MWDebtFree: Soon, it becomes second nature.
FredFlick: yeah eat beans and live like a hermit
MWDebtFree: ILG - YUCK!!!!!
MWDebtFree: I'm so sorry.
Tghrek: I second that, MW
Bkparrish: isn't the key understanding what caused the behavoir?
Tghrek: bk, understanding is one thing
ILG123: Is all hope lost??? You all sound like it's my funeral. Is is?
MWDebtFree: The key is understanding the behavior AND making a conscious
effort to change the behavior.
Tghrek: there are many doctors who smoke
SalliGreen: I know what caused my behavior...Walmart!
FredFlick: my father didn't love me now I spend to much? no I spend too much
cause I'm greedy
OnlineHost: LHoltzinge has entered the room.
Tghrek: Salli, stay away from Walmart, then!
MWDebtFree: ILG - No sweetie, just the word IRS strikes fear in my heart.
LOL
TLN1882007: But ILG, you have 16 people at your funeral! Just kidding.
FredFlick: will that be pine or beachwood casket ILG?
OnlineHost: DBPW has entered the room.
FXRmonster: God...I'm gonna buy a stereo...then I'll stop...
FredFlick: IRS is a word? I thought it was three
ILG123: I can't afford to be scared anymore!
TLN1882007: Are you paying for the casket Fred?
MWDebtFree: FX - You are bad!
OnlineHost: Ranger Gr has entered the room.
FXRmonster: he he
MWDebtFree: Fred - IRS is one. Internal Revenue Service is three.
FredFlick: sure TLN will you use it?
MWDebtFree: RANGER
MWDebtFree: HELP
Bkparrish: charge it, fred!
Ranger Gr: Hello!
MWDebtFree: BK - Now who's being bad.
Tghrek: FX, that's like saying "I'll start my diet after this chocolate
sundae"
TLN1882007: ILG, seriously, I've been there. IRS will work with you.
DRDimond: shouldn't you pay the debt with the highest interest rate first?
Bkparrish: :)
MWDebtFree: Tghrek - EXACTLY
Sprky 3B: please help I have a high debt ratio less than perfect credit I
have been
Sprky 3B: offered a 15k line of credit at 15% which will pay most of my debt
is this
Ranger Gr: Help with what?
Sprky 3B: a good or bad idea??
ILG123: DR even I defaulted on a repayment plan
FredFlick: but one more sundae won't hurt
TLN1882007: BAD idea. Right MW?
FredFlick: buy the stereo brother
MWDebtFree: Fred - You are wrong.
MWDebtFree: FX - Do not listen to Fred.
FXRmonster: and new furniture...
TLN1882007: Yeah Fred
Ranger Gr: Who is this Fred guy?
FredFlick: where's the statistic to show that?
TLN1882007: Ranger, LOL
Tghrek: do not listen to fred in this instance
MWDebtFree: Sprky - What kind of credit are you talking about?
Tghrek: he's playing devil's advocate
TLN1882007: do not listen to fred in any instance
FredFlick: actually never listen to fred - he is succesful
Ranger Gr: Am I in the Fred Room? I thought this was Debt Free Land. . .
FredFlick: debtfree and living the high life
MWDebtFree: LOL Ranger.
Tghrek: FX, whatever you buy, pay with cash AFTER you've made your debt
payments
OnlineHost: DBPW has left the room.
TLN1882007: LOL
OnlineHost: NSaleem786 has left the room.
FXRmonster: Fred...Barney there with ya?
DRDimond: it makes sense to get rid of the accounts charging 18, 19% first...
Sprky 3B: a couble of 30 day lates no defaults
FredFlick: Barney? geez I prefer pokaroo
OnlineHost: ILG123 has left the room.
TLN1882007: Oh, my GOD. Could I get a copy of this chat?
OnlineHost: Presto1234 has entered the room.
MWDebtFree: Sprky - What kind of credit were you offered?
Tghrek: "I love you, you love me, we're a great big happy family..."
Sprky 3B: a couple of 30 day lates no defaults
OnlineHost: ALIMINE has left the room.
MWDebtFree: TLN - All the chats can be downloaded from the download area on
Money Whiz.
FredFlick: just as a frind tig!
Tghrek: TLN, just highlite and save the chat transcripts
Bkparrish: MW, I agree with DR but how can you determine which costs
more--high%, low bal or vice vrsa
OnlineHost: LHoltzinge has left the room.
Tghrek: high interest more costly in long run
TLN1882007: Thanks, I never knew that. Good idea. I'll fill up my hard
drive and then buy a new comput
MWDebtFree: I'm sorry BK, I missed that. We always recommend paying the
lowest balance first.
Ranger Gr: BK --what's the debate -- which cards to pay off first?
Sprky 3B: a 10 yr line of creditat 15%
MWDebtFree: The reason is that if you pay off the lowest balance, you can
roll the amount you were
Tghrek: TLN, save it on floppy disk
MWDebtFree: paying on that one into the next smallest debt and so on.
FredFlick: TLN? geez I thought I was the only sarcastic jerk in here!
Tghrek: cheaper than new computer
FXRmonster: I had to buy a 3 gig drive to store my transcripts....AOL will
put it right on your card !
OnlineHost: SJacobs942 has left the room.
FredFlick: with you here Tig nothing is floppy
Tburg63: LOL
Ranger Gr: I agree with MW -- you get the emotional boost as each debt
disappears.
MWDebtFree: Before you know it, you'll be paying LOTS on your debts.
OnlineHost: CDees77 has entered the room.
MWDebtFree: That's right Ranger.
Tghrek: aw, gee, shucks, fred
Tghrek: <blushes>
FredFlick: heheh
FXRmonster: Roger Ranger !
MWDebtFree: Motivational.
Tburg63: What if even your lowest takes so long?
SalliGreen: DebtFree..would you suggest taking money invested in a 401K
program to pay off debt??
FredFlick: no that's anthony robbins job
Tghrek: Tburg, stick with it, it does get better
MWDebtFree: Tburg - Pay as much as you can on it to eliminate it as soon as
possible.
FXRmonster: I feel like charging stuff...just to have the orgasmic sensation
of paying it off
Presto1234: what abt charged off accts should you attempt to repay them?
Ranger Gr: Tburg -- look for ways to speed up the process.
SalliGreen: I love Anthony Robbins!!
MWDebtFree: FX - I'm sorry. This is not a sexual chat.
FredFlick: so do I
Ranger Gr: Sell some of your junk or get a second job.
Tburg63: Yes, working on all of the the above
Tghrek: FX, now, don't be facetious
Ranger Gr: Cash in savings bonds,
FredFlick: nothing like a man who will sell you $5 worth of stuff for $100!
FXRmonster: 19% isn't sexual? get a grip....
Ranger Gr: or trade down in cars.
Tghrek: anthony robbins? he's here?
MWDebtFree: FX - Consider yourself warned.
FXRmonster: <spank> sorry
FredFlick: NEVER trade down in cars - depriciation hit is worse
Ranger Gr: Please -- the issue is dumping debt. All cars depreciate.
FredFlick: car loses %30 first 2-3yrs
Presto1234: MW: should you attempt to repay chrgd off actt frm 1993-94?
Ranger Gr: Exactly -- so lose the expensive car and get a cheap one.
Tburg63: You cant trade DOWN from an 89 corolla with 172,000 on it
MWDebtFree: Presto - Did they sell the debt to a collector?
Ranger Gr: Tburg -- I sense you're in deep. What's the story?
FredFlick: some faster than others - However, when selling a lexus to move to
a tercel you actuall lose
Presto1234: dont know credit bureau sd chrged off creditors havent found me
Bkparrish: thanks MW, will keep checking the boards for your wise advice. :)
see ya.
OnlineHost: Bkparrish has left the room.
Ranger Gr: Fred -- cars aren't investments. They're stuff. Lose the debt!
FredFlick: depreciation is worse when new - let it age then ditch it
Tburg63: No--we're of and are working it out. I'll take 4 years
MWDebtFree: Presto - The thing is, even if they don't find you, if collection
activity is taking place
MWDebtFree: on an account, it won't leave your credit report until the last
activity on it.
FredFlick: Actually some cars are an investment - just most can't afford them
MWDebtFree: Seven years from the last activity.
MWDebtFree: FRED
Ranger Gr: True.
FredFlick: I cite an example.....
OnlineHost: Bkparrish has entered the room.
SMurphy88: it also continues to accrue interest Presto...
MWDebtFree: Exactly SMurphy.
OnlineHost: Bkparrish has left the room.
Ranger Gr: But collecting antique cars is way beyond this crowd.
FredFlick: the head honcho of Dominos pizza bought a Buggatti within a year
he made 22 million profit
SalliGreen: DebtFree...would you suggest taking money invensted in a 401k
program to pay off debt??
MWDebtFree: NO
Ranger Gr: Salli -never.
Presto1234: ? is if I pay that becomes actice activity so am I putting myself
in deeper
MWDebtFree: I would, however, suggest stopping contributions to the 401k
until the debt is paid off.
Tburg63: Thanks, but it's late, Good Night everyone
Presto1234: they look like theyre charged off
MWDebtFree: Night Tburg!
Ranger Gr: Big danger -- you lose or leave the job and the $$ is due w/i 60
days.
OnlineHost: Tburg63 has left the room.
DRDimond: what does charged off mean?
OnlineHost: CDees77 has left the room.
OnlineHost: FXRmonster has left the room.

Tezby: If an account is closed will it still stay on your credit record?
MWDebtFree: Presto - If they are trying to collect, that activity continues
to show up.
Ranger Gr: 7 years.
OnlineHost: FXRmonster has left the room.
FredFlick: of course it is still debt
MWDebtFree: Tezby - 7 years from the date of the last activity.

OnlineHost: Pottsad has entered the room.
MWDebtFree: Just remember, chareoffs are usually sold to collectors.

will disappear from your

HapyBuddah: no
Ranger Gr: DR -- it's a bad debt made good. Stays on 7 yrs.
Presto1234: ok so you suggest I pay them? lil by little?
MWDebtFree: DrDimond - No, but it makes it look better than if it isn't paid
at all.
Presto1234: someone told me to just wait 7 yrs
FredFlick: hmmm yeah maybe that will work
SMurphy88: there is no way to "restore" negative credit legally, but is no
longer a debt for you,
Ranger Gr: Presto -- wait for what? Pay cash and it doesn't matter.
Tghrek: 7 years is a long time
SMurphy88: and no longer will cost you interest
MWDebtFree: Ranger - RIGHT!
DRDimond: what happens after seven yrs?
MWDebtFree: Dr - The debt goes bye bye from the credit report.
OnlineHost: JeanLNH has entered the room.

Ranger Gr: i before e fred
FredFlick: I work in a building warmer in the winter
Sprky 3B: home valued at 125k
TLN1882007: No, I work in a field
Presto1234: and who will give me credit?
Tghrek: gold fields, like Bre-X
MWDebtFree: LOL Tig
MWDebtFree: Sprky - Is this a home equity loan?
Ranger Gr: Presto -- mortgage companies or banks for a home.
Sprky 3B: YES
OnlineHost: JeanLNH has left the room.
MWDebtFree: Sprky - NO

yrs since graduated but inc
Tezby: What is so bad about equity loans?
Presto1234: increased salary almost triple
MWDebtFree: Tez - Where do I begin.....
Sprky 3B: thank you
MWDebtFree: Number One - You cannot borrow your way out of debt.
Tghrek: equity loans put your house on the line
SMurphy88: I think Sprky is offered a home NO-equity loan-essentially same as
unsecured
Ranger Gr: Presto -- the key is stability. Show the mortgage co you're a
good risk.
Tghrek: and if you default, you lose your home
SMurphy88: but we don't have time for this one tonight...
TLN1882007: Presto, banks will average your last 2 years income
MWDebtFree: Number 2 - If anything happens to affect your ability to repay
the loan, you lose you home.
MWDebtFree: Number 3 - You are trading unsecured debt for secured debt. Bad
answer.
OnlineHost: TENNIS10IS has left the room.
MWDebtFree: Number 4 - You are only perpetuating the behavior that got you
into your present position.
SMurphy88: No bank will foreclose on a 15M loan-no equity-on 125M home...
Presto1234: can anyone recommend a good mortgage co?
Ranger Gr: You can't borrow your way out of debt.
MWDebtFree: Any questions?
TLN1882007: Comment
Ranger Gr: You're fixing the symptom, not the problem.
MWDebtFree: Exactly Ranger.
TLN1882007: I haven't charged anything for 2 1/2 weeks.
Sprky 3B: nope
Sprky 3B: nope
TLN1882007: That's 18 days
Ranger Gr: TLN -- 2+ yrs.
Tghrek: keep it up, TLN!
FredFlick: congrats TLN keep up the good work
Turnwright: My husband wanted to get a home equity loan to pay off credit
card debts. I told him no
TLN1882007: Thank you
Ranger Gr: It gets easier. . .
SMurphy88: MW-how do you know if behavior is changed until you try?
MWDebtFree: Turn - You are correct.
Turnwright: he said interest was tax deductible. I still said no . What do
you say?
DRDimond: how about a credit card that you pay in full every month?
TLN1882007: Can't wait for that feeling Ranger
MWDebtFree: Use a stun gun if you must, but no home equity loan.
Tghrek: TLN, studies show it takes, on average, three weeks to break a bad
habit
Tghrek: keep it up!
FredFlick: stun gun? kinky!
TLN1882007: thanks
Presto1234: ive been credit card free for 3 yrs!!!!!
FredFlick: I have faith In him

FredFlick: I have beed credit card free since about 1am this morning!
MWDebtFree: Turn - Yes you may.
OnlineHost: Lflair has entered the room.
HapyBuddah: I don't even want to start... at least with credit cards... one
to be able to make
HapyBuddah: reservation and what not... but other than that they just seem
like bad news.
HapyBuddah: You have to be a financial wizard to be able to bennefit from
credit cards
OnlineHost: USAR K9 has left the room.
TLN1882007: Fred, I HOPE you are joking
Tghrek: what happened, fred, lost the card?
MWDebtFree: Fred - Then you need the stun gun.
MWDebtFree: LOL Tiggy
Presto1234: how much dwnpymt is necessary for someone with bad credit?
OnlineHost: AVANTIFIN has left the room.
FredFlick: not joking had to buy gas
OnlineHost: Sprky 3B has left the room.
MWDebtFree: Happy - You can use a Visa check card to make reservations, etc.
TLN1882007: Shouldn't have done it
FredFlick: why not?
Ranger Gr: Presto -- shoot for 20%. Then you avoid PMI.
MWDebtFree: Presto - For what?
TLN1882007: Should have walked
HapyBuddah: Thats what I do :) thanks :)
Tghrek: buddah, unfortunately, the average American is not a financial wizard
Presto1234: for a mortgage?
Turnwright: I am looking for low-interest credit card to pay off others.
There are so many intro. rates,
MWDebtFree: Happy - GREAT! Sounds like you've got it together.
HapyBuddah: So true Presto
Turnwright: but i don't want to keep tranferring. What is a decent rate to
shoot for?
Apollo18dl: boy MW, you hate those home equity loans.huh?
MWDebtFree: Turn - They don't call them teaser rates for nothing.
FredFlick: credit cards are not evil people
OnlineHost: Foxwaz has left the room.
MWDebtFree: Apollo - I do indeed. I hate anything that takes advantage of
others.
FredFlick: only using them as a loan is
Ranger Gr: Turn -- pay off the debt. Quit shifting it around. Fix the
problem.
OnlineHost: JEO22061 has entered the room.
DRDimond: I must go. thanks for all the good info!
MWDebtFree: Fred - No, cards aren't evil. It's the marketing guys.
MWDebtFree: Dr - Come back soon!
HapyBuddah: Let me tell you something that will probably make me have to burn
this screen name:
Presto1234: 20% thats a lot ill never save that much
Tghrek: cc's aren't evil in and of themselves...
OnlineHost: DRDimond has left the room.
FredFlick: marketing guys? I didn't see them forcing anyone
HapyBuddah: I am a collector for a credit card Co.
TLN1882007: Yes, fred, but to us they are evil
Tghrek: it's the fact that most people don't know how to use them that is
evil
SMurphy88: here we go-everyone is responsible for their own actions...
MWDebtFree: A joke Fred.
MWDebtFree: Jeez.
Turnwright: We just started working with Quicken. We are ready to fix the
leak. We just want to get th
Turnwright: e debt paid off.
Ranger Gr: Presto -- maybe not in a yr, or two, but think long term.
Presto1234: arent there any help for reformed creditors like me??? :-)
Turnwright: doubt it!
MWDebtFree: Everyone is responsible for themselves, the problem is that they
teach sex education
FredFlick: in fact credit cards are usefull versatile tools
MWDebtFree: in schools and not personal finance.
HapyBuddah: hahahahah
MWDebtFree: Fred - You are wrong.
Tghrek: LOL, MW
Turnwright: Amen! MW
FredFlick: that's cause the sex thing is so much more fun!
Apollo18dl: MW..if i have a bunch of equity, and can't make minimium
payments, why not?
FredFlick: how so MW?
SMurphy88: agreed, but plenty of info out there (and here) to get and make
choices...
MWDebtFree: Apollo - Because you are engaging in the same behavior that got
you into trouble in the
MWDebtFree: first place.
Tghrek: apollo, you risk your equity... is it worth it?
MWDebtFree: How can two wrongs make a right?
SMurphy88: How do you know when behavior is changed?
TLN1882007: Apollo, because you are giving yourself permission to NOT fix the
problem
JEO22061: Hi DebtFree!!!!! :)
Tghrek: they don't call it a risk for nothing
MWDebtFree: TLN - EXACTLY
MWDebtFree: JE!!!!!!!!
FredFlick: just because people are unable to avoid going into debt cause they
are weak doesn't lessen
MWDebtFree: How are you hon!!!!!
FredFlick: usefullness of CCs
MWDebtFree: FRED
Apollo18dl: do i start having slow pays in it's place?
Presto1234: does anyone know any good programs (computer) for personal home
finances?
FredFlick: yes?>
TLN1882007: I did it three times and I know MW is right
TLN1882007: I'm still here today
HapyBuddah: Fred... credit cards are scarry... I work for a credit card co.
and the
MWDebtFree: Thanks TLN!
HapyBuddah: stuff that I know-- stuff that you 'shold and can' know... but
noone
HapyBuddah: really seems aware of it until it is too late- they are DESIGNED
to
Ranger Gr: Murph -- the behavior is changed when you don't even consider the
ccards as an option.
HapyBuddah: make you fail-- it is a built in mechanisim
Ranger Gr: When it's cash or go without.
JEO22061: I am just great!!!!! I discharged this week. YEA!!!! Time to
start living again.
Tghrek: Fred, care to debate that philosophy further?
MWDebtFree: Happy - Thank God! An industry person who agrees with me.
Ranger Gr: When the budget works.
MWDebtFree: JE - I am so proud of you girl!!!!
TLN1882007: Share one tip with us Hapy, on what we don't know I mean.
FredFlick: hmm strange three years of card usage and yet I haven't failed
SMurphy88: But many here are not considering cc as option, yet no one here
considers it a wose
Ranger Gr: When it's the end of the month and there's money. Or the
beginning.
SMurphy88: choice to restructure debt-
Tghrek: you're one of the rare ones, fred
SMurphy88: oops-"wise choice"
MWDebtFree: We don't all have a daddy to run to for help.
OnlineHost: Leone7 has entered the room.
Tghrek: hope you don't fall off the tightrope, fred
Turnwright: My husband wants to build up some savings, but I want to get the
cards paid off. How should
Turnwright: we compromise?
FredFlick: tightrope? more of a concrete bridge really
Ranger Gr: Murph -- "restructure" is shift it around and pretend you're
fixing it. Pay it of.
MWDebtFree: Turn - You need an emergency fund so he is right there.
OnlineHost: Leone7 has left the room.
SMurphy88: if paying it in full not an option, and cc not an option, what
next?
MWDebtFree: But just an emergency fund.
Turnwright: How do we come to a figure?
Tghrek: no, using cc's is walking a high wire without a safety net
MWDebtFree: No longterm big savings till the debt is paid off.
MWDebtFree: Turn - You need at least three months of living expenses saved up
to handle emergencies.
Ranger Gr: Murph -- pay the minums on all but the smallest balance.
MWDebtFree: Like losing a job, medical problems, car problems, etc.
TLN1882007: Hope you don't experience an earthquake fred
Turnwright: Sounds good MW
Tghrek: three to six months living expenses is a good emergency fund
Ranger Gr: Sell stuff or get another job and attack the smallest debt.
KDanleyCT: i have 16K in cc debt; if I charge a $20 shirt today, and make
only min paymts, how much wil
KDanleyCT: will my shirt cost when i do pay for it
HapyBuddah: Well its SO true... for example, credit crd co's make TEN TIMES
more off
HapyBuddah: delinquient accounts then regularly serviced "good standing"
accounts-- you go
HapyBuddah: delinquient, you get a year long higher interest rate + you are
charged late fees +
HapyBuddah: over line of credit fees-- they charge the ones that CANT pay way
more than the
MWDebtFree: The only way to break out of the plastic handcuffs is to have the
cash on hand to handle
MWDebtFree: emergencies.
HapyBuddah: ones that can-- it is a dommonio effect to the detriment of the
average debtee
SMurphy88: Ranger-why stay with CC's if you no longer consider them an option
and you can reduce the
TLN1882007: MW, when you say no longterm savings, what do you mean?
Ranger Gr: When it's gone, apply that payment to the next, and so on.
FredFlick: especially med problems - cost my grandparents $45K! for three
days
SMurphy88: cost to service the debt elsewhere...the behavior is changed,
isn't it??
MWDebtFree: TLN - Mutual funds, 401k's, etc.
Presto1234: I have a problem managing my money because I own a seasonal
business where
Ranger Gr: Murph -- I don't stay w/ CCs. Mine are gone.
Presto1234: my income isnt steady any sugg in savings and budgeting?
Ranger Gr: I use a debit card occasionally.
Tghrek: save lots when in season, ranger
MWDebtFree: Presto - Use last years income figures to come up with monthly
averages.
FredFlick: debit cards are great can't overspend by too much
MWDebtFree: FRED
MWDebtFree: Wrong
Presto1234: i also work for a company so I do have manoey I can count on
SMurphy88: So are mine-but many out there have changed behavior, but can't
pay off yecould pay off
FredFlick: overdraght I know
MWDebtFree: Anytime you use plastic you spend up to 30% more.
SMurphy88: faster by lowering %%
Presto1234: thats the problem last year part time
KDanleyCT: thanks mw
SMurphy88: MW--What??
Tghrek: debit cards make people spend more, by like 30% compared to cash
HapyBuddah: Yeah... even my CheckingVisa lets me go way over...
FredFlick: most people's overdreaught protection is lower than their credit
limit though
Tghrek: plastic too easy
MWDebtFree: There is no emotional attachment to plastic like there is to
cash.
HapyBuddah: true
MWDebtFree: It does not register emotionally that you are spending money.
Ranger Gr: Murph -- do the math. The difference b/w a 12% and a 16% card is
small potatoes
FredFlick: actually cash is dirty - no attachement there
MWDebtFree: That's why so many stores, like grocery stores, now accept
plastic.
Ranger Gr: if you're heavily in debt. I think
MWDebtFree: It ups their revenues.
Ranger Gr: it gives you a fasle sense of fixing the problem.
SMurphy88: not small potatoes on15-20M of debt over 3-4 yrs...start savings
...
Tghrek: there's a reason why the banks are promoting debit machines
everywhere... to make money!
KDanleyCT: does anyone dispute the emotional attachment theory. I've gotten
so used to plastic
Presto1234: mw any sugg for good computer home budget manager?
FredFlick: geez the hour goes by quickly eh?
Presto1234: i use quickbooks for company
MWDebtFree: Presto - Quicken or Microsoft's Money '97
SMurphy88: Presto-Quicken is fine for starters...
Tghrek: 13 minutes left
TLN1882007: Emotional attachment is not even felt with a debit card
MWDebtFree: TLN - That is correct.
MWDebtFree: Or checks even.
TLN1882007: On Quicken, is there a debt reduction plan section
FredFlick: yeah but I have these pretty pictures on my checks
Turnwright: MW, do you think 12 to 13 % interest is decent rate for 8,000
credit card debt? By the way
Tghrek: besides, it makes you think twice everytime you line up to withdraw
money
Turnwright: that really hurt to type that
Turnwright: number
KDanleyCT: cash, huh. I'm going to think about it.
Ranger Gr: But .. if you have a cash budget, and the debit card is used w/i a
category, it is like cash
MWDebtFree: TLN - No, but Freedom has some software. If you email him, he can
send it to you.
FredFlick: so many zeros eh turn! listen to MW she will help
MWDebtFree: Turn - I bet it did. That's a much better interest rate than a
lot of people ha.
SMurphy88: Ranger-what line of work are you in?
MWDebtFree: have.
TLN1882007: Thank you. Is it only through him or is it online here?
Tghrek: turn, MW gives great advice... listen to her
HapyBuddah: it is so psychological-- if you went to the store, brought the
stuff
HapyBuddah: home and didnt pay for it, what is that?? STEALING... well, the
only
Presto1234: so should I try to repay my past due bills or just concentrate on
saving?
HapyBuddah: difference is that the card co pays the store for you- but you
still
HapyBuddah: never paid. If we were "taught" that not paying debt was
STEALING,
Apollo18dl: MW...she???
Ranger Gr: Murph -- lawyer.
HapyBuddah: it would really help alot of people to never get into that
situation...
HapyBuddah: people don't think of it in those terms when they hand over the
card
HapyBuddah: and the merchant says "thank you"
MWDebtFree: TLN - Only through him.
SMurphy88: what specialty?
MWDebtFree: MW is a she indeed.
FredFlick: super woman really
Ranger Gr: Prosecutor in military.
TLN1882007: A she who knows
Turnwright: We all expected you to be a man didn't we! Shame on us!
MWDebtFree: A few good men indeed.
Tghrek: a great she, in fact
FredFlick: military? big bucks there!
Ranger Gr: Hardly, fred.
MWDebtFree: Turn - No, I just think like one. LOL Mean and nasty.
KDanleyCT: mw, when's the next scheduled chat like this one?
FredFlick: it was sarcasm son
SMurphy88: Now there's a place where people are held accountable for their
debts...
Ranger Gr: It's not what you make -- it's what you save.
Presto1234: i didnt women are better with money......
Tghrek: MWFeisty
MWDebtFree: KDanley - Every monday night.
OnlineHost: JEO22061 has left the room.
MWDebtFree: LOL Tiggy
MWDebtFree: Ranger - EXACTLY
KDanleyCT: thanks. I'm fired up
FredFlick: true Ranger - in fact the middle class save more proportionatly to
the rich
Tghrek: hey, I counted wrong... the show's over!
MWDebtFree: Great KD! That's when it's time to attack the debts.
Tghrek: oops
Turnwright: I didn't mention my husband's student loan that has an extra zero
Apollo18dl: no problem. just surprised. just imagined a 70 year old banker
with no hair :)
SMurphy88: pretty lively tonite...see ya later...
Turnwright: bye
TLN1882007: bye Smurph
MWDebtFree: Yeah, everyone, it is time. Any last questions?
Ranger Gr: Rich people tend to think their income will always be there --
they save less.
KDanleyCT: bye
MWDebtFree: By Smurphy!
Tghrek: bye smurph
FredFlick: she is bald too
OnlineHost: SMurphy88 has left the room.
MWDebtFree: I am bald????
Tghrek: MW bald?
Tghrek: since when?
Ranger Gr: 70?
Tghrek: better not!
FredFlick: there are socio-economic reasons ranger
Turnwright: My husband will be on next week to get his stun gun therapy .
Thanks MW
MWDebtFree: Shoot. I'd take bald over this mop.
Apollo18dl: shanade oconner??
KDanleyCT: is that what happens when you save? baldness?
MWDebtFree: LOL Turn, I'll have the gun ready.
Tghrek: turn, go for it!
MWDebtFree: KD - LOL
